Understanding today's Panchāṅga
Neutral explanations of each element — no predictions, only what the almanac records.
Vāra
Vāra is the weekday, reckoned from one sunrise to the next rather than from midnight. Each weekday is associated in tradition with a planetary lord.
Tithi
A Tithi is a lunar day — the segment during which the Moon gains 12° on the Sun. There are thirty tithis across a lunar month, split between the waxing and waning fortnights.
Nakṣatra
A Nakṣatra is one of the 27 lunar mansions the Moon travels through. The Moon's nakṣatra at birth anchors the Vimśottari Daśā sequence.
Yoga
Yoga is a value derived from the combined longitudes of the Sun and Moon, one of twenty-seven listed in the traditional almanac.
Karaṇa
A Karaṇa is half of a tithi; two karaṇas make up each lunar day, giving a finer division of the day.
Pakṣa
Pakṣa is the fortnight: Śukla (waxing) as the Moon brightens toward full, and Kṛṣṇa (waning) as it darkens toward new.
Moon Rāśi
The Moon's Rāśi is the zodiac sign it occupies, read here at sunrise. It shifts roughly every two and a quarter days.
The Panchāṅga belongs to the day. Your Jyotish belongs to your chart.
